Exercise:
Two coils are oriented along their common axis. The first coil carries a current. The second coil is short-circuited i.e. its s are connected with a wire. Determine the direction of the current induced in the second coil relative to the current in the first one when the coils are moving together or apart respectively.

Solution:
When the first coil is moved towards the second coil according to Lenz's law the current induced in the second coil creates a magnetic field whose direction is such that the first coil experiences a force opposing its motion. Therefore the magnetic fields created by the two coils have to have opposite directions. This means that the two currents flow around the two coils in opposite directions e.g. clockwise through the first and anticlockwise through the second coil. medskip When the first coil is moved away from the second coil the current induced in the second coil creates a magnetic field whose direction is such that the first coil experiences a force attracting it to the second coil. As a consequence the two currents flow around the two coils in the same direction e.g. both clockwise.
